In March 26, GPSN hosted an inaugural NT Club dinner in Darwin, bringing together students from the new Charles Darwin University (CDU) Menzies Medical Program and FlindersNT medical students – marking an important milestone for the Northern Territory’s future medical workforce.
The event, attended by almost 40 students, was the first of its kind and provided an opportunity for students from both programs to begin building a connected community centred around general practice and rural generalism.
The evening was attended by GPSN National Chair Dineshe Mohanarajah, who noted strong enthusiasm from students to create a more connected Territory-wide network.
Building on this momentum, students are now working towards establishing a new NT GPSN local club. The initiative is being spearheaded by Aaron Gordon (FlindersNT MD3) with support from the GPSN National Committee, and aims to bridge the gap between the two student cohorts through networking, peer mentorship and advocacy.
Encouragingly, the establishment of a new GP Club for the NT also drew strong interest from key stakeholders including the NT Regional Training Hub, NT Primary Health Network, Rural Generalist Training Unit, RACGP, ACRRM and the CDU Menzies Medical Program – highlighting a shared Territory sector stakeholder commitment to strengthening the Territory’s primary care workforce.
