Hey everyone!
I’m Shawn, and I’m super excited to be your GPSN National Chair for this year. First off, huge congrats to all of you for getting into med school. That’s no small feat, and you should be really proud of yourselves for your achievements! Whether you are joining as a high school leaver, taking a gap year, just completed another course, or are joining from a career change, medicine welcomes you! Medical school can be quite a daunting place when you first begin, and it will likely be very different from anything you have ever experienced, so O-Week is a great time to make sure you begin on the right foot!
O-Week: More than just a week
So, O-week. Honestly, it’s the golden ticket to starting med school on the right foot. It’s not just about the freebies and the fun (though, let’s be honest, that’s a big part of it). It’s about diving headfirst into everything med school has to offer. I promise, getting involved now makes the intense world of medicine feel a lot more manageable and way more fun.
Medicine: It’s a journey
Medicine is tough, no doubt about it. But it’s also filled with moments that’ll make you laugh, challenge you, and inspire you every single day. And remember, it’s okay to find your own pace and your own way of doing things. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach here.
GPSN in 2024: Keeping it real
This year, GPSN is focusing on making general practice shine in all its diverse glory, making sure you know about all the cool paths you can take as a GP. We’re also pushing to make GP placements even better and making sure your voices are heard where it matters. Plus, we’ve got a bunch of workshops and events lined up to help you get a taste of what being a GP is all about.
Getting Involved: Just do it
During O-Week, hit up the GPSN stall. The team there is pumped to meet you and answer any questions you’ve got. Being curious and asking questions is the best way to bust myths about general practice and really get to know what it’s all about. While you are there, also look into the myriad of special interest and performing arts groups that your university might have to offer! Medical school is as much about the content you learn in medicine as it is about the wealth of opportunities and experiences that are afforded to you throughout your time studying.

Last year, we made sure med students were heard at the national level, and we’re not stopping there. If there’s anything you’re passionate about or think needs changing, come talk to us. We’re here to make sure your med school experience is the best it can be. Just reach out to your University GPSN Representative, and we will ensure that your concerns are addressed at the highest level possible!
The vibe for this year
I want this year to be about inspiration, sure, but also about making real connections and supporting each other. GPSN is more than just a society; it’s a community where you’re going to find some of your closest friends and co-workers.
So, here’s to making the most of med school, finding your tribe, and maybe even discovering a passion for general practice along the way.
