Dear GPSN community,
As we move into the second half of the year, it’s the perfect time to pause and reflect on our journey so far.
This mid-year milestone offers us a chance to celebrate our achievements, learn from our experiences, and set our sights on the goals and opportunities that lie ahead.
Success at our MDANZ workshop
We recently had the privilege of participating in the Medical Deans Australia and New Zealand (MDANZ) and GPSN Workshop at the University of Melbourne, and I am thrilled to report that it was a massive success. With physical representation from over 13 local Chairs, the meeting with Professor Steve Trumble, MDANZ’s General Practice Consultant, was incredibly productive.
During this consultation, we shared your experiences from general practice rotations, providing actionable feedback on improving placement quality and reducing placement poverty. Our discussions were insightful, and I am confident that the changes we advocated for will soon be reflected across medical schools in Australia and New Zealand.
This collaborative effort highlights the power of student voices in shaping the future of medical education.
NAIDOC Week: Honouring First Nations peoples
NAIDOC Week is just around the corner, and it is a significant occasion for all of us. This week is dedicated to celebrating the history, culture, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of cultural awareness and understanding in medicine and healthcare.
As future healthcare professionals, we have a responsibility to ensure that our medical practice is inclusive and respectful of First Nations peoples. Cultural competence is not just an additional skill but a vital component of effective and empathetic healthcare delivery. Understanding the unique health challenges and perspectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is crucial in providing care that is both respectful and effective. GPSN is committed to fostering this awareness and integrating it into our learning and practice.
Reflecting on our journey
Reaching the midpoint of the year is a perfect opportunity to reflect on our journey so far. It’s a time to practise gratitude, acknowledge our achievements, and consider the lessons we’ve learned. In the demanding environment of medical school, it’s easy to overlook the importance of friendships and family. These relationships are crucial for our well-being and support system.
Take this moment to assess what has worked well in your study and time management strategies and what hasn’t. Use these insights to adjust and improve as we head into the latter half of the year. Finding a balance between academic responsibilities and personal time is key to sustaining success and avoiding burnout.
Upcoming events and opportunities
For those of you in NSW and ACT (and perhaps beyond), we are excited to announce our upcoming GP First Steps Conference, which will take place on Saturday 20 July in Sydney. This annual event is a fantastic opportunity to engage with peers and professionals, gaining insights into the world of general practice. See below for further information!
Final thoughts
As we continue this journey together, I want to extend my heartfelt gratitude for your dedication and enthusiasm. Let’s keep supporting each other, making the most of every opportunity, and striving for excellence in our medical education. Together, we can shape a brighter future for general practice and healthcare as a whole.
Warmest regards,
